William ABEL (jnr) was born at Norfolk Island, the son of William ABEL, a convict who had been transported per the "Pitt" in 1791 on a 7 yr sentence, and Mary Ann MOREY. William came to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the "Porpoise" in 1818 (his parents had come to New Norfolk in abt 1808). Link to his father's record http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/abel/william/123804. William was convicted of stealing cattle, the property of Mr. Bryan Bennett of New Norfolk, at the Hobart Supreme Court, 21 April 1845, and given a Life Sentence. He stated he had not been before the Courts before. He was recorded as a widower with 7 children. Aged 45yrs; a farm labourer; Protestant; 5'10"; stout build. William Abel was then given a Probation Period of 3yrs to serve and was actually sent to Norfolk Island. He returned to Van Diemen's Land per the 'Lady Franklin' 31 Jan 1850. He then had two assignments at Morven (now called Evandale)in the north of the Colony. 5 Dec 1854: Ticket of Leave granted.
