Thomas Akers was transported on the Charlotte, departing 13th May 1787 and arriving 22nd Jan 1788 with 111 passengers.

Being 335 tons, 105 ft long and 28 ft at the beam, The Charlotte held 88 male and 20 female convicts. Built in 1784 and Skippered by Master Thomas Gilbert, her return to England saw her doing the London - Jamacia run until she was sold to a Quebec merchant in 1818 and was then lost off the coast of Newfoundland that very same year.

Thomas died June 4th 1824, prior to the 1828 Census but here we find Ann, living with Thomas (jnr) her son: Sainty & Johnson; 1828 Census of New South Wales: Page 30… [Ref A0062] Acres, Thomas, 30, born in the colony, Catholic, settler at Airds, 10 acres, all cleared, 7 horned cattle. [Ref A0063] Acres, Lucy, 26 born in the colony. [Ref A0064] Acres, Mary Ann 5 born in the colony. [Ref A0065] Acres, Thomas, 8 born in the colony. [Ref A0066] Acres, Henry 2 born in the colony. [Ref A0067] Acres, Ann, 70, free by servitude, Mary Ann, 1799, 7 years, Catholic.

In the colony, sometime around 1792, Thomas started a de-facto relationship with Ann Hinchley/Guy (Convict, Mary Ann, 1791). Ann had been married to Joseph Guy in London, prior to being transported. Ann and Thomas had 5 children in the period 1792 to 1801.

Thomas was tried at Devon Lent Assizes held at Exeter Castle on Monday 14 March 1785 before Sir Beaumont Hotham Knt. and Francis Buller Esq. His crime was:- "Thomas Acres and John Smith: For feloniously assaulting John Squance in the King's Highway felonoiusly putting him in corporal fear and danger of his life in the said highway and feloniously and violently taking from his person and against his will in the said Highway 10s. his monies" He was found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. The sentence was reduced to transportation for seven years.
