4/4/1828 Cambridge Chronicle and Journal Cambridgeshire, England: SUFFOLK ASSIZES BURGLARIES.__James Peachey (27) William Alexander (26) and George Leabon (22) pleaded 'guilty' to two indictments for burglaries committed in the houses of Philip Hicks, of Wetherden, and of James Hart, of Yoxley, and stealing therein a very large quantity of property. They were repeatedly and strongly admonished by Mr. Baron Garrow to expect no favour or remission of their sentence in consequence of pleading guilty, and assured that no severity would be shown towards them in consequence of their pleading not guilty, and taking their trial ; and the clerk of arraigns was directed to call on them a second time for their plea. They, however, insisted on pleading as they had before done.__Proclamation for silence having been made, the learned Judge proceeded to pass sentence of death on the unhappy culprits, after which they all knelt down and begged for mercy in the most piteous accents. Leabon was dreadfully affected ; his parents are very respectable, and the Judge allowed witnesses to be called to give him a character.__"In the course of the proceedings of this day," said the learned Baron, "you three unhappy young ment have been called upon to say whether you would take your trials by a jury of your country upon two several indictments preferred and found against you, charging you with the capital crime of burglary. The trial continued..... The learned Judge then, after a suitable exhortation, passed upon the prisoners the awful sentence of the law. James Peachey arrived per Lord Melville 1829. William Alexander and George Leabon were on the Royal George 1828. William Alexander was 27 years old on arrival. Native Place: Suffolk. William was literate, married with 2 children, 5'3½" tall, ruddy and freckled complexion, brown hair, dark hazel eyes, small scar under left jaw. Assigned to Thomas Seley??
