National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/38/38 Prisoner name: Thomas Albone (or Thomas Allbone), John Merryweathers (or John Merreweather or John Merryweather) and William Wright. Prisoner age: Albone, 25 years; Merryweathers, 26 years; Wright, 27 years. Court and date of trial: Bedford Lent Assizes, March 1836. Crime: Wounding with intent, to injure or murder John Stonebridge (keeper to Lord Ongley) at Hossacks Wood [Biggleswade, Bedfordshire] on 25 January 1836. Initial sentence: Death. Annotated (Outcome): 'Day of execution 2 April 1836'. Petitioner(s): Joseph Hume [MP]. J Sydney Taylor (defence counsel). Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Petitioning on a matter of principle; punishment of death in such cases is not productive of the public good; Albone had drawn his weapon with intent to destroy game, not to injure the keeper. Other papers: Newspaper cutting from the Morning Post reporting the trial. Notes giving legal arguments relating to recommendations to mercy by a jury. Letter from Gasalee [judge] to the Home Office informing them that reprieves for the three convicts have been forwarded [to the gaol]. Date, 1836 Mar.
