National Archives. HO 17/5/1 1836 Feb Prisoner name: Thomas Arnold. Prisoner age: 13 or 14. Court and date of trial: Gloucester [Gloucestershire] Adjourned Quarter Sessions March 1835. Crime: Housebreaking and stealing iron, value 11d from a coal pit. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Gaoler's report: Character indifferent. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Hannah Arnold of Bristol (the prisoner's mother) undersigned by seven tradesmen testifying to the good character of the petitioner (occupations and addresses given). Grounds for clemency: The prisoner's youth; his mother is a widow with a large family; previous good character; he suffered poverty and hunger; emotional distress of his mother. Other papers: Letter from Hannah Arnold forwarding her petition. Additional Information: Prisoner sailed on the Aurora to Van Dieman's Land [June 1835]
