City Assizes. Sentence of death was recorded against ... ; Wm. Dade and Robert Bell, for robbing Mr. Jeremiah Batchelder of 10 sovereigns, &c. on the highway at Lakenham ; ... Bury and Norwich Post, 19 Aug 1829. Monday morning last the following convicts were conveyed from the City Gaol on their way to City Gaol on their way to Portsmouth, pursuant to their respective sentences of transportation, viz Wm. Dade, John Townson, Wm. Batson, Robert Bell, Joseph Baxter, and W. Rudd, for life; Steph. Norman, John David Gooch, and John Taylor, for fourteen years. Norfolk Chronicle, 19 Sep 1829. National Archives. HO 17/54/61829 Oct 5 Prisoner name: William Dade. Prisoner age: 23. Court and date of trial: Norwich City Summer Assizes, 10 August 1829. Crime: Highway Robbery upon Jeremiah Batchelor (farmer, of Shottisham, Norfolk) on the road between Norwich and Lakenham on 21 February 1829. Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Character very bad, once in prison before. Annotated: Nil.
