On Thursday, Mr. Coffey, of the Clare Constabulary, aided by the Police force in this City, succeeded in arresting Anthony Boland, who is charged with the daring burglary and robbery in the year of 1824, at Wood-Park Lodge, Galway, the seat Edward Read, Esq. who was fired at and seriously wounded the occasion. Patrick Toohy, James Roughan and Patrick Durick, charged with the same offence, have been also apprehended by the Tomgreany and Mount-Shannon Police and committed to Galway gaol for trial at the next assizes. Cork Constitution, 10 Oct 1826. ROBBERY. On Sunday night, the house of Woodpark-Lodge, near Mount Shaunon Dally, county Galway, the seat of Counsellor Philip Reade, was attacked by a gang of about 20 robbers, who, after firing several shots, succeeded in entering the house, when it was discovered that Mr. Reade was desperately wounded, it is feared mortally—the fellows proceeded to break desks, &c. in search of money, in which, with the exception of a trifling quantity of silver, they failed ; they took Mr. Reade’s watch and a double barrel gun. The watch is No. 727, capped and jewelled—the maker, Shean, Houston.— Immediately after this transaction, Ensign Dwyer, of 54 Veteran Battalion, with 2 party of his corps, and some of the Police and yeomanry, took up several suspicious persons, who, however, could not be identified. Mr. Reade was a gentleman of the most amiable character, and loved and respected by his tenantry. He is still alive. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 13 March 1824. GALWAY ASSIZES. Patrick Tuohy, James Brogan,Anthony Boland, otherwise Anthony Frank, and Patrick Durack, the elder, were placed at the bar, charged with having been four of the party who committed a burglary and robbery at W Park Lodge, near the town of Scariff,ou the night of the 7th of March, 1824, and firing at and desperately wounding Philip Reade Esq. on that occasion. They severally pleaded not guilty. After the evidence had been gone through, gave the Baron Smith in a long charge to the jury, the advantage of of every circumstance in their favour, with his usual humanity; and directing the jury that they were bound to give the prisoners the benefit of the slightest doubt, where the testimony was principally, that of an approver against the prisoners by acquittal. and returned The jury retired for a few minutes, with a verdict of guilty against all the prisoners. On Friday, the Baron, in a most feeling and impressive manner, passed sentence of death on all the prisoners—stating, that though while he felt bound to give them the full benefit of every circumstance in their case, yet, it was his duty to state, that he that he most fully concurred in the justice of the table the verdict ; that on the approver, he gave him full credit for every word he had uttered, and that he had never seen any witness who conducted herself with more propriety than Anne O’Dea, placed in the situation she was. He desired them not to have the slightest expectation of mercy, as they had been guilty of a most atrocious offence against an un-offending gentleman, by shooting him in his bed.— (Anthony Boland here exclaimed it was his brother who fired.) The Baron frequently gave way to tears during the passing of the sentence. The prisoners received the sentence on their knees, and repeatedly called for mercy and a long day. Patrick Tuohy, one of them, confessed his guilt, but said he had been forced there, and that he did not know the remainder of the party, except Edmond who had been convicted at last summer assizes, at Ennis, and Daniel Dinar, who had gone to America.
