James Boylan was transported on the Waterloo, departing 21st May 1836 and arriving 6th Sep 1836 with 220 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

Convict Notes




The Convict Indentures state that James Boylan was 21 years old. He could read; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Monaghan. He was a farm labourer. James was convicted of assault on 15 July 1833 at Monaghan and sentenced to 7 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 4 1/2 inches; complexion dark and freckled; hair brown and eyes grey. Transport number 146. Prisoner number 36-1949. 1837 NSW Muster states that James was assigned to Mr J. P. Pickering, Sydney, NSW. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1843 (number 43/2244). The Warrants of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland were issued for the list of convicts of Surrey in 1835 lists James Boylan (transport number 68). A comment added next to this entry states that an Application now with authorities for further consideration. The Surrey Convict Indentures on arrival in Australia in 1836 state that James Boylan did not embark.
