Convict Notes

Bridget absconded from her husband several times. Absconded. Clarke Bridget, Asia (7), No. 30-32, 28, Cavan, allwork, 5 feet 3 inches, ruddy and freckled comp., brown hair, hazel eyes, white speck in right eye, sight weak, from J. Brewster her husband, since 6th April, 1835. Fourth time of absconding. NSW Govt Gazette, 8 Apr 1835. It appears she had left him for Robert Browning by 1837, as the following case shows: Supreme Court. Richard Browning was charged with assaulting James Brewster, residing in Clarence-street, Sydney, fruiterer, on the 20th of October last, and stealing from his person six promissory notes for the payment of money, value £1 each, and sundry silver coins of the realm, amounting to twenty shillings. James Brewster, sworn — On the 20th October last, between the hours of eleven and twelve o'clock at night, the prisoner, or a man of similar appearance came up to me, knocked me down, and took from me a purse containing six £l notes and twenty shillings in silver ; about a week after it occurred, I met Browning in the street, and I obtained a warrant on suspicion of his being the man who robbed me ; I do not now believe the prisoner to be the man who robbed me ; I suspected him at the time because my wife was living with him, and as no other person but her could have known that I was possessed of the money in question, I thought she had put him up to robbing me of it. On this evidence, Mr. Therry, who was conducting the cases for the Crown, of course abandoned the prosecution, and the prisoner was declared — Not Guilty. The Australian, 3 Feb 1837.

James Brewster, for having forged note in his possession, knowing to forged, was sentenced to transportation for fourteen years. Saunders’ News-Letter, 20 Dec 1810.
