Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. Mary Briggs basic convict record was already set up Details from Pamela Nye:- "Mary Briggs was my great, great, grandmother. I obtained official police records written in copperplate. Name: Mary Briggs; Height: 5’13/4”; Trade or Calling: Nurse Girl; Ship Character: Dirty, noisy, impertinent, and a liar; Offenses: Stealing handkerchiefs in Preston, Once in prison on suspicion and discharged; Religion: R/C; Relations—Apprenticeship—Where last residing: Pat and John S Mary can collect at Manchester CB; Where tried: QS Court; When tried: 24th October 1842; Sentence 7 years; Native Place: Paisley/ Galway; Below that information in the recent text is the following information that appears to be taken from further records I cannot decipher: Briggs Mary. Margaret. 19 July 1843. Lankishire Preston- QS 19 October 1842. 7 years. Transported for stealing handkerchiefs in Preston, Lankashire. Once in prison on Suspicion. Surgeons report Noisy Quarrelsome, a liar. PPH2cnd class PPH 22cnd class. 17 Juune 1844. Redgate. Absent without leave. Four months hard labour house of correction./Q P/ F Hobart. 21 6 44 November 5 1844. Staples Absent without leave 1 week solitary confinement. S.B. T. 11 March 1845. Lt. Smart. Misconduct by.
