Mary Bryant nee Broad's profile in The Australian Dictionary of Biography begins with: "Mary Bryant (b.1765), convict, was baptized on 1 May 1765 at Fowey, Cornwall, England, the daughter of a mariner named Broad". This is incorrect, and was based purely on a check of Fowey's register in the 1930s. Parish records of Cornwall are now readily available, and so are Boswell's papers at Yale University Library, and they reveal that Mary Broad was baptised on 10 March 1765 at Lanlivery, Cornwall, parents William and Dorothy Broad, who moved to Fowey in the 1770s. Boswell's papers show that Boswell sent Mary back to her family at Fowey in 1794, Mary's sister Elizabeth had married Edward Puckey, Mary's younger sister was 'Dolly' (Dorothy), and there were references to the Pope family (Mary's paternal grandmother was a Pope). There was a Mary, parents William (a mariner) and Grace born at Fowey in 1765, but this family moved to Devon in the 1770s. Meanwhile the family of William and Dorothy moved to Fowey.
