Alfred BROWN was convicted at Ipswich, Suffolk, England on 12 Jan 1838 for stealing shoes. Two previous offences. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Augusta Jessie' arriving 3 Dec 1838. Ship Surgeon's report: "hard working and for the most part, well behaved". Single man; shoe smith; aged 24yrs; 5'6 1/4"; sallow complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes; tatoos. Place of birth: Suffolk, England. Assigned to work services in the Colony. Some records of misconduct whilst stationed at the Archer estates (northern Tasmania). 1846: Free Certificate, No. 111. 20 Oct 1865: Charged and convicted for stealing horse shoes. 12mths hard labour.
