Convict Notes

Tuesday evening last, the person who has the keys the hall at Etruria, belonging to Josiah Wedgwood, Esq. (and which has been unoccupied for some time) had occasion to visit the house, and was much struck at finding one of the doors little open, that he returned for further assistance, thinking that improper persons were within. - His conjectures were correct, as on his return with additional aid, the door, which a short time before was open, had been closed and fastened in the inside.—On breaking it open, two men were discovered, one of whom made his escape through window, but was soon overtaken and secured; the other made play with large knife, but was shortly overpowered and placed, together with his companion, in custody.— The object of these fellows, was, it seems, to take away the brass, furniture, & any other articles which they could conveniently carry off; and the damage done in breaking the handles from doors, bells, &c. is very considerable.—The circumstance of a quantity the stolen property being found in a house at Newcastle, by T. Hutchinson, bespeaks that it was at least a second visit these gentry were paying, when they were so fortunately apprehended.—One is named Ralph Brown alias Jones, the other Ganiera, an Italian; both have been residing for some time in Newcastle.
