Convict Notes

Parents - William and Mary (nee Musselwhite) Bruton of Salisbury (six siblings) Hampshire Advertiser - 30th October 1847 A real Hampshire thief Frederick Bruton age 19 was indicted for stealing a pig, the property of Thomas Shettle, on the 8th September 1847. The pig, which was a very fine one, hung up at the prosecutor's shop, and at ten in the evening, the prisoner carried off the pig. The prosecutor was informed of the robbery by a person who had met him with it, and went in search, and overtook the prisoner carrying it, in Mount Street. On the prosecutor coming up with him the prisoner dropped the pig. He was secured, and a foot of the pig, marked by the police, was now produced. The prisoner had said he was hired by another person, but now he did not make any defence. The jury returned a verdict of guilty. The prisoner has twice before been convicted of felony. The recorder sentenced him to seven years transportation. The fellow left the bar laughing.
