Joseph Buckley was transported on the Waterloo, departing 21st May 1836 and arriving 6th Sep 1836 with 220 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

Convict Notes




The Convict Indentures state that Joseph Buckley was 20 years old. He could read; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Cork. He was a labourer. Joseph was convicted of assault and robbery (not attempted) on 27 November 1835 at Cork City and sentenced to 7 years. He had one prior conviction and served one year. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 3 1/2 inches; complexion ruddy and freckled; hair brown and eyes grey. Transport number 101. Prisoner number 36-1904. 1837 NSW Muster states that Joseph was assigned to Mr William Jackson, Gundaroo, NSW. Received ticket of leave on 8 October 1840 (number 40/2164) at Queanbeyan, NSW. Comment that ticket of leave cancelled on 19 May 1842. He had absconded on 19 May 1840. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1842 (number 42/2039).
