Prisoner name(s): William Buckley. Prisoner age: 40 years. Court and date of trial:... Reference: HO 17/23/70 Description: Prisoner name(s): William Buckley. Prisoner age: 40 years. Court and date of trial: Glasgow Circuit Court, September 1835. Crime: Rioting. The victims James London, Robert Wardrop, Alexander Taylor and three others (all Special Constables). The rioting was between Orangemen and Roman Catholics in Airdrie. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's report: Character good. Annotated (Outcome): Sailed on the Elphinstone for Van Diemen's Land. Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by 30 people of Glasgow, with a note from H Hamilton, Magistrate. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): This was the prisoner's first offence; he is truly penitent; a quiet, peaceable, man; he was present for a short time while the riot occurred; his petitioners are well respected people. Other papers: The indictment. A letter from [William Buckall] forwarding the petition. A letter from D Boyle forwarding a letter from Lord Meadowbank the presiding judge, describing the events leading to the trial. Additional Information: The prisoner was convicted with Thomas McHugh and John McKelvie. Date: 1835 Dec 15; 1836 Feb 24 William was 41 years old on arrival in VDL. He was married with 1 child, wife Christian (maybe Christina?) at Glasgow. William was born in Donegal, Ireland. Surgeons report: Uniformly good most attentive at school. William was 5’3 ½” tall, grey eyes, dark reddish brown hair, arms and breast freckled. 17/11/1840: TOL 16/9/1842: Free Certificate. There is a death listed for a William Buckley aged 80 on 31/1/1856 who died of decay of nature – however the William Buckley per ‘Medina’ was also born 1794 as was the birth date given on Founders and Survivors for the above William.
