Mary Burris was transported on the Andromeda, departing 30th Nov 1833 and arriving 17th Sep 1834 with 176 passengers.
Also, same day, from Cork, whence she sailed May 25th, the ship Andromeda, 401 tons, Benjamin Gales master, with 173 female prisoners; Henry Kelsawl, Esq., Surgeon-superintendant. Passengers — Fourteen free females, viz. Mary Manning, Martha Morron, Margaret Mahon, Margaret Sheedy, Mary Ann Nixon alias Welsh, Catherine Kiernan, Mary Cassock, Catherine Stanton, Johanna Neville, Mary Lyons alias Hynes, Maria Moran, Catherine O'Donnel, Margaret Kennedy, and Mary Sullivan, and twenty-six children; also twenty-three children belonging to the prisoners. "Mary married Lewis Wellard and I am a direct descendent of Lewis and Mary through their daughter, my 2x G.Grandmother, Elizabeth Wellard, who married John Taffe/Taafe at Branga Park Station (near Walcha) 4 March 1865.”"

Convict Notes




On 2/7/1836, whilst serving her term, Mary received permission to marry Charles Powell, also a convict, and they were married in Port Macquarie on 2/7/1836. Mary and Charles had two children during their marriage Sarah and Frances. Charles Powell died in 1862. Mary received her ticket of freedom on 17/6/1842. Mary then married Lewis Wellard, another convict, on 20 Sept 1862 and they had four children during their marriage. Jane 1842-1864, William 1844-1943, Elizabeth 1848-1826 and Stephan 1853-1933. Data from Mary's death certificate. Mary, who tended to liked a little drink, was arrested by the police for being “Drunk & Disorderly” on a number of occasions, 1/12/1865, 13/12/1866, 30/10/1868 and 23/7/1869. On 7/12/1868 Mary was arrested for Stealing.
