History of Norfolk Island from the period of its Discovery in the year 1774, to-1 August 1854, by Aaron Price http://archival-classic.sl.nsw.gov.au/_transcript/2017/D25793/a9818.html (Aaron Price was a convict who was sent to Norfolk Island, and remained there afterwards as an overseer.) 1835, 8th Aug. An attempt at murder was made by JAMES BURROWES on a fellow prisoner named JOHN DUNSLEY by striking him with a spade. DUNSLEY was conveyed to the Hospital where he died on the 18th. -------------------------------------------------- Norfolk Island Commission Court. 1ST DAY, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19th, 1835.— The Court was this day opened. The Warrant having been read by Mr. Fisher, the following Commissioners were sworn by John H. Plunkett, Esq. … 3RD DAY.—James Burrows was arraigned for the wilful murder of one John Dursly, with a certain shovel, &c. The prisoner persisted in pleading Guilty, His Honor dwelt at some length on the aggravated circumstances of the case, as they appeared on the sworn depositions, and passed sentence on the prisoner. The prisoner said he had to request of the Court that his body should be buried and not dissected. His Honor said, it was his painful duty to pass that sentence which the law awarded; he could not therefore alter the sentence. There was another Officer of the Court (the Deputy Sheriff) who was sworn to see that sentence carried into effect. The Court could not or would not interfere with him, but he was certain that gentleman would perform his duty both according to law and humanity. The Sydney Monitor, 20 Jan 1836.
