The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

National Archives. HO 17/54/41829 Oct 9 Prisoner Name: John Edmund Burtt. Court and date of trial: Surrey [Quarter] Sessions September1822. Crime: Stealing a necklace from a child at Camberwell Fair. Intial sentence: Transportation for life. Annotated: In New South Wales. Petitioner(s): John Burtt and Mary Burrt, the convict's parents, with the signature of William Bowditch, prosecutor, and J Busby, Barrister at Law. Grounds for clemency: First offence: appointed an Assistant Overseer in New South Wales in consequence of his good behaviour; the prosecutor always believed the sentence to be very severe and has signed the petition. Additional Information: The convict was transported on the ship Ocean, 24 April 1823, and is employed at Windsor Road.
