John Byers (Byhurst) was firstly convicted for larceny in July 1829 and imprisoned for 8 months. He reoffended in NSW and was sent to Cockatoo Island on an Iron Gang for 1 year. His ticket of leave was cancelled for immoral behaviour. He was pardoned 7 June 1853 on the condition he never return to England. He later went to Victoria and settled at Spring Creek near Beechworth having taken up with another convict from Tasmania Catherine Ragan/Thompson. Her son Nathaniel Thompson took his name Byers, but John and Catherine had no issue.
