VDL Conduct Record: “Twice transported before; bad in every respect. Hulk report orderly. Married with one child… Stated this offence, returning from transportation: ‘transported for shop stealing in 1830, sentenced 14 years, sent to Sydney in the ship York. I escaped 1831.’ He refuses to give any information as to his mode of escape from Sydney” (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-7$init=CON31-1-7p300).
