Convict Notes




Catherine Callagan was sick during the voyage to Tasmania. The following appears in the surgeon'a journal: "Folios 8-11: Catherine Callegan, aged 25, Convict; disease or hurt, gastritis. Put on sick list, 22 March 1852, at sea. Discharged, 18 May 1852. 'This woman is of a tall and slender make, of leuco-phlegmatic temperament', she had suffered sea sickness and complained of a sense of burning heat in the epigastric region, gastric irritability, headache, prostration of strength and thirst." Further details of daughter's death, from the surgeon's journal. "Folio 15: Mary Ann Calligan, aged 18 months, Convict's Child; disease or hurt, marasmus. Put on sick list, 4 May 1852, at sea. Died, 27 May 1852. On being brought to the surgeon she 'presented a miserable and emaciated appearance' and was suffering marasmus and bulimia. She would eat the allowance of two adults if allowed."
