Colonial Times, Hobart, 22 Sept 1848. CONVICT DEPARTMENT. Comptroller-General's Office, Sept. 18, 1848. In accordance with the Act of Council 6th Victoria, No. 18, I hereby give notice, for the first time, that His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor has been pleased to approve of the solemnization of Matrimony between the under-mentioned parties :— John Campbell, T.L., Royal Sovereign, and Catherine Thomson, T.L., Emma Eugenia, both residing at Bothwell.




John CAMPBELL was convicted at Lancaster, England on 6 Dec 1836 for stealing a watch. Previously convicted and served time in prison. Gaol Report: "very bad character". 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship "Royal Sovereign" arriving 9 Jan 1838. Ship surgeon's report: "very good". Single man; aged 19 yrs; trade - a cooper; 4'11 1/2"; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; grey eyes. Native place of birth: Liverpool, England. Colony of VDL: Assigned to work services. Numerous notes of misconduct and punishments. 1842: Sentence extended by 12 mths 1844: sent to Port Arthur Penal settlement 1845: at Ross 1846: at Campbell Town 1846: at Jericho, VDL There is a marriage for John CAMPBELL per "Royal Sovereign" in 1848 - APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 15 Sept 1848: Caroline THOMPSON per “Emma Eugenia” to John CAMPBELL per “Royal Sovereign” MARRIAGE: 8 Oct 1848 - Caroline THOMPSON, aged 28 yrs, spinster to John CAMPBELL, aged 27 yrs, labourer at Parish Church, Bothwell, VDL. (ref. 37/1/7 no. 1417) Although there are many persons named John CAMPBELL, the records indicate he was the only one transported on the Royal Sovereign.
