In the colony, Thomas married Catherine Shaw at Richmond in 1818. Catherine was the daughter of William Shaw (Third Fleet Convict, 1791, "Atlantic") and Catherine Neale (Irish Convict, 1796, "Marquis Cornwallis"). Thomas and Catherine had 4 chidren; William 1816, John 1817, Mary Ann 1824 and Sarah 1826. Some of the family are recorded in the 1828 census; Page 82... [Ref C0422] Carpenter, Thomas, 41, free by servitude, Gambier, 1809, 14 years, tenant, N. Richmond, 22 acres, 22 cleared, 14 cultivated, 5 horned cattle. [Ref C0423] Carpenter, William 11 born in the colony. [Ref C0424] Carpenter, Mary, 5, born in the colony. ## No mention of Catherine, John or Sarah. Catherine and Sarah were still definitely in the colony, Catherine did not die until 1894 and Sarah in 1914. When Thomas died in 1831, Catherine remarried. She married John Medhurst (Came Free, 1825, "Phoenix") and they had a further 5 children.
