John Chapman was transported on the Ocean, departing 22nd Apr 1823 and arriving 27th Aug 1823 with 175 passengers.
The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

BURY SESSIONS. John Fordham and John Chapman, (against whom Charles Cook was admitted evidence,) were convicted of stealing a quantity of lead of the house of, Mrs. Gould, Sonthgate-Green, and sentenced to 7 years' transportation—which punishment Chapman had already once undergone.— Cambridgeshire Chronicle, 17 Jan 1823.

On Friday last the ten following convicts were removed from our Gaol to be put on board the hulks at Portsmouth, viz — Richard Kemball, James Wright, Wm. Lungley, Thos. Finch, James Smith, Thos. Bird, Samuel Garrard, Thos. Gathercole, Samuel Fordham, and John Chapman Bury and Norwich Post, 5 March 1823.




NSW 1828, Census. John Chapman, age 52, G.S, 1823, 7 years, pro, Labourer, Mr Jno. Coghill Kirkham, Cooke district. -------------------------------------------------- John Coghill was a landholder at Kirkham, Cooke district. The census records that he held 13000 acres of land, he had 64 horses, 772 cattle and 4160 sheep, so presumably he employed many labourers. -------------------------------------------------- NSW Convict Index. John was born about 1776. He came to NSW on OCEAN in 1823 as convict 7years. In 1828 census he is recorded as Government servant of Kirkham, Cooke labourer with Mr Jno (Coghill).
