Convict Notes

25/3/1826 Leicester Chronicle Leicestershire, England: George and John Chapman stood indicted for stealing an 80 gallon copper, the property of Mr. Henry Bates, dyer, of Soar-lane. The copper had been missed from a summer house in the prosecutor's garden, on the 11th of February last, and the prisoners were seen dragging it down the Soar on the same day ; they afterwards sold a part of it as old brass. They produced two witnesses to prove an alibi, but their evidence was very unsatisfactory, and they were found guilty, and sentenced to be transported beyond the seas for the term of seven years. John and George Chapman, and John Whittaker, convicted at our Assizes, were removed from the Borough Gaol, on Thursday morning, for the hulks at Woolwich. Leicester Chronicle, 1 April 1826.
