Lazarus Chapman was transported on the Ocean, departing 22nd Apr 1823 and arriving 27th Aug 1823 with 175 passengers.
The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Joseph son of James & Sarah died in 1880 at Camden, buried at St Johns. Arthur William son of Joseph/Sevira Jane joined the Australian Army in 1940 & became corporal NX27779 2/20th Battalion & died as a Prisoner of War in 1945 at Labuan/Sandakan Borneo-no known grave.




Lazarus was born the son of James & Sarah at Stoke Somerset in 1793. He was Protestant and became a farmer & wool sorter. He is recorded in musters in 1823, 1824 & 1825 as employed by Mr (McArthur) of Cawdor. In 1828 he is recorded as woolsorter with Jno (McArthur) at Camden. He was given his Ticket of Leave at Camden in 1832 & was still there in 1837. At some time he purchased 1rood of land at North Gundagai NSW. In 1839 he married Margaret (Wenz) at Campbelltown Between 1841 & 1864 they had 12 children Elisabeth, Juliana Marianna, Mary Maria, James, Sarah, John, Margaret, Maria, Joseph, Henrietta Elisabeth, Catherine, Thomas Lazuras at Camden, Camden Farm & Camden Park. Margaret (Wenz) was born at Hattenheim Germany about 1822 and arrived in NSW on KINNEAR in 1838. She died in 1905 age83 at North Sydney, buried at Gore Hill. Elizabeth/Elisabeth born 1841 married John Hall (Brown) farmer labourer from Northampton on EARL OF DURHAM at St Johns Camden & produced 13 children at Bathurst Yass Sydney. She died 1908 age67 at Sydney. Juliana Marianna born 1842 died at Sydney about 1864 age23?. Mary Maria born about 1843 married William (Barber) storekeeper/forwarding agent at St Johns Camden in 1866, left Camden before 1868 and produced 7children. She died at Yass age40 in 1883. James born 1844, died at 10days. Sarah born 1846, died 1860. John born 1848, married Sarah Ann (Dowle) at Camden about 1867 & produced 6children 1869-83 Alice Jane, Julia Ann, Thomas Benjamin, John William, Elizabeth Mary, Sarah Ann at Cowra, Camden, Bathurst. He died at Cowra in 1921 age73. Sarah Ann (Dowle) was born at Lydd Kent 1840 & came free as a child to NSW on SABRINA in 1854.She died 1937 age97 at Cowra. Margaret born 1851 married Patrick Joseph (McCurtayne) at Camden in 1824; she died at Sydney in 1914 age63. Maria was born Camden Park in 1853 married Gustavus Adolphus Pfeffer (Herfort) at ??? in 1875; she died Crows Nest 1925 age62. Joseph was born 1856 at Camden Park married Sevira Jane (Brailsford) at Camden in 1880 & produced 12 children Thomas Lazarus, Margaret Ada, Elizabeth May, Osborne Joseph, Isabella Jane, George, Ada Maud, Ruby Minna, Ernest John, William Arthur, Mavis Ida Mary, Joseph at Camden, Narellan, Wagga Wagga. Sevira Jane (Brailsford) was born Camden about 1857. She died in 1922 age65 at Narellan buried at Roman Catholic. Henrietta Elisabeth was born 1858 at Camden Park married William A (McComiskey) at Narrabri in 1883. Catherine was born 1861 at Camden Park. She married John (Dickinson) at Sydney in 1885. Thomas Lazarus was born 1864 at Camden. He married Agnes Annie (Ashton) at Woonona in 1894 maybe at Clifton & produced 3children Agnes Annie (Ashton/Aston) was born in Dudley Lancashire about 1874. She came to NSW in 1882. She died at Clifton in 1945 age about 51. John & Sarah Ann's daughter Alice Jane was born in 1869 at Cowra and went on to marry John (Ellis) at Cowra in 1896; Their daughter Julia Ann was born in 1871 at Camden and went on to marry George Henry (Lawrence) at Cowra in 1898. Their son Thomas Benjamin was born about 1874 at Bathurst and went on to marry Morlena Susanna (Goode) at Goulbourn in 1900. Their son John William was born about 1876 at Cowra and went on to marry Frances Jane (Tindall) at Cowra in 1902. Their daughter Elizabeth Mary was born about 1879 in Cowra and went on to marry Frederick (Hayman) at Cowra in 1906. Their daughter Sarah Ann was born (and died) about 1883 at Cowra. Joseph and Sevira Jane's son Thomas Lazarus was born in 1881 at Camden. He married Margaret K (Glengillan) at Camden Park in 1913. Their daughter Margaret Ada was born 1882 at Narellan. She married Ebenezer (King) at Camden in 1905. Their daughter Elizabeth May was born in 1883 at Narellan. She married Albert Ernest (Watson) at Camden in 1911. Their son Osborne/Oswald Joseph was born in 1885 at Narellan. He married Edith Lillian (Latty) at Camden in 1913 & had at least 2children Sydney James born Alexandria about 1913 & Arthur William born 1914 and died 1945 age39(probably 31) Prisoner of War Borneo-no known grave-at Labuan. Edith Lillian (Latty) was born 1886 at Brownlow Hill NSW. Their daughter Isabella Jane was born 1886 at Narellan. She married John (Vannan) at Camden in 1912. Their son George was born 1887 at Narellan. Their daughter Ada Mada was born 1888 at Narellan. Their daughter Ruby Minna was born 1889 at Narellan. Their son Ernest John was born 1892 at Narellan and died 1893. Their son William Arthur born 1895 Narellan. He married Ruby May (Fisher) in 1915. Their daughter Mavis Ida Mary born 1897 Wagga Wagga. Their son Joseph born about 1899 Wagga Wagga.
