Convict Notes
Charles and Elizabeth Pearce never married for 2 reasons. The first Charles was already married possibly to Hannah Griffin born 1791 in England their daughter probably Hannah Henrietta Coe born 1829. The second reason was that Elizabeths first and deceased husband Richard left statement in his will, that stated Elizabeth was not to remarry.




Commitments to Chelmsford Gaol. 1st instant, Charles Coe and James (by James Brewster, Esq ) for assault, and feloniously taking from the person of Samuel Clark, Earles Colne, the sum of nine shillings and six pence. Essex Herald, 7 Apr 1829 Charles Coe and James Edgeley were convicted «f assaulting Samuel Clark, at Earls Colne, and taking from his person the sum of nine shillings and six pence, his property. Essex Herald, 5 May 1829 Friday last, ... Leigh Domville alias Dines, for horse-stealing; Charles Coe and James Edgeley for assault and robbery at Earles Colne; John Ware and James Ware, for receiving a donkey, and George are and James King, for stealing the same, to the Leviathon hulk Portsmouth; the three first being sentenced transported for life; John and James Ware for fourteen years, and the two last-mentioned for seven years. Charles Coe with Elizabeth Pearce had seven children. Elizabeth (father Daniel McGinnis (d In london) mother Elizabeth surname in colony became McGuiness, she arr 1818 on Friendship). No marriage details so assuming Elizabeth and Charles did not marry. Their children Jane 1844-1932, Charles 1847-1928, Sophia 1848-1897, Thomas 1851-1933, Elizabeth 1856-1946, George 1861-1938 twin to Rachel 1861-1935. Rachel marr Thomas Bowman of Coonamble.




Charles Coe was 27 years old on arrival and was transported for ‘Picking Pockets’. Charles was 5’4” tall, dark ruddy complexion, black hair, dark hazel eyes, large scar of cut thus Y on back of head, could read. Charles was also married with 1 child. Charles was assigned to Cornelius O'Brien at Illawarra – O’Brien also had properties at Bathurst. 1839: TOL Bathurst. Then charged with forgery and sentenced to 3 years in irons at Bathurst Gaol. The sentence was reduced to 1 year and he was released in 1841. C1844: Married or had a de facto relationship with Elizabeth Pearce nee McGuinness. Elizabeth was the widow of Richard Pearce who died in 1839 aged 27, they had 4 children. Elizabeth and Charles had at least 6 children together. Elizabeth died at Coonamble in 1898. 1845: TOL Goulburn. 20/3/1850: CP 16/8/1885: Charles Coe died aged 82 from complications from Bronchitis and was buried at Kipplaw (Church of England) Cemetery, near Goulburn NSW.
