William Coffee and his brother John were both tried and convicted at Nenagh Tipperary, Ireland on 18/03/1843 for assaulting the habitation of Teddy Dwyer, appearing armed. They both stated "they were not there". Transported on the 'Orator' arriving Van Diemen's Land 21/11/1843. Roman Catholic; can read; single; 23yrs of age; fair complexion; dk brown hair; blue eyes; 5'6 1/2"; Native Place: Co. Tipperary. Ploughman and farm labourer. Brother John on board same ship. 2yrs Probation. Station Gang: Maria Island (small island off the East Coast of Tasmania). Colonial Offences: 12/02/1844: Neglect of duty in not properly washing mens shirts - admonished. 30/11/1845: Emerged from Gang. 05/10/1846: Misconduct - being in a Public House for purposes of tippling - Reprimand. 05/02/1849: Misconduct - being in a Public House on Sunday - 21days imprisonment and hard labour. 22/11/1850: Idleness - 6 days solitary. 02/01/1851: Misconduct - fighting and creating a disturbande at a Racecourse - 6mths imprisonment and hard labour. Assignments include Tunbridge, Antill Ponds, Richmond, Coal River, Sandy Bay, Huon. William applied for permission to marry Catherine Smith (free) on 24/10/1848 but this was refused.
