Convict Notes
Samuel COPESTICK was convicted at a Court Martial in Port Louis 1838 for striking an officer, 35th Regiment. 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia per the ship 'Henry' arriving 1839. Single man; Church of England religion; brickmaker; 5'11 3/4" height; dark complexion; dk brown hair; brown eyes; scars and marks of punishments. Native place of birth: Staffordshire, England. Father: John, a brickmaker at native place. Mother: at native place Brothers: Thomas, George & John Sisters: Ellen, Martha & Anne Samuel COPESTICK was further convicted at Berrima, New South Wales and given a further 15 yr transportation sentence, on 26 July 1842 for stealing from a dwelling house. Transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Sir John Byng' 1843. 1845: at Port Arthur Penal Settlement, VDL. Several records of misconduct and punishments. 1 Jan 1849: Oatlands - charged with stealing a sheep. Not Guilty. 24 Dec 1850: Ticket of Leave granted. 31 March 1857: Ticket of Leave granted. 3 July 1860: Certificate of Freedom issued, at Campbell Town, Tasmania. 23 July 1861: Death of Samuel COPESTICK (entered on Index as "Shenrich", at Campbell Town, Tasmania.
