Hugh Cowen was 34 years old when transported for "Uttering base coins of sixpences". Hugh was 5'4" tall, sallow complexion, black hair and whiskers, dark small eyes, wife Margaret and 3 children, could read and write a little. Hugh's wife and children arrived in VDL in 1854. 1856: COF 2/1/1878: Hugh (listed as Cohen) shot and killed Joseph Barnes on the Barton Estate, Macquarie River. Joseph was on a neighbouring farm and his cattle were straying on to Hugh's farm, Hugh turned up to warn him and had a gun and shot him. Hugh was sentenced to be hung, this was commuted to life imprisonment at Hobart. 1898: Hugh died at Hobart.
