Convict Notes
Tried at Carrington, Nottinghamshire, England and given a Life Sentence, however commuted to 15 yrs. Transported on the 'Maitland' to Norfolk Island. 30 months period of labour. Transported to Sydney on the 'Lady Franklin' then to van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) arriving 27 Sep 1844. His Conditional Pardon was approved 24 May 1853. Tasmanian record: Protestant; could read & write;5'5 1/2"; single; age 23yrs;hazel eyes; dk brown hair; tattoo; mole on right arm; scar on face; lost part of forefinger on right hand. Married Ann Hill (from Clare, Ireland) at Launceston, Tasmania, 30 Jul 1857. 6 known children. Charles died at Gawler, nr Ulverstone, Tasmania 15 Oct 1904, aged 82 yrs. Charles, wife Ann and daughter Annie are all buried in the General Cemetery, Ulverstone (headstone with cross, iron surrounds). His parents are believed to be Nathanial Cullen and Sarah Lees from Nottinghamshire. Charles' son Thomas married Ada Tongs.
