CONVICT SHIP ATLAS II, Left Ireland May 1802 and arrived 30 Oct same year. Ship’s Captain Musgrave. [This is a different ship to ATLAS I which left Ireland in November 1801 and had a heavy death rate under Capt Richard Brooks.] ______________________________________ James Cullen tried 1799, Life Sentence, Wexford according to ship Indent, but Wicklow according to his 1817 petition. Thought to be a captain in the rebels. 1804 following Castle Hill uprising -one of the James Cullens was ordered (with a group of 34 prisoners) to be kept in irons until they could be "disposed of". Was it this James Cullen or the "Friendship" man? * 1806 NSW Muster -Prisoner at Parramatta * 1814 Muster - Marketkeeper. Mustered at Parramatta * 1816 Muster - market constable at Parramatta * 1817 Petition, 5 Dec 1817, for mitigation. Says he was tried at Wicklow and given Life Sentence. Has always worked in government employ "as assistant to the Clerk of the Market - and Gaoler - which latter situation he still holds" .... from his general good conduct and a regular and honest discharge of the duties imposed on him … to solicit .. a Conditional Pardon. This was granted quickly to him: * 1818, 31 January, Conditional pardon. Native of County Wicklow, Convicted at Co Wexford, LIFE< Details: 5ft 3&1/2 inches, dark ruddy complexion, silver grey hair by then and grey eyes. 1822 Muster - Assistant Gaoler, Parramatta 1828 Muster - aged 58 per Atlas 2, Under Gaoler at Parramatta. Is this the death of this James Cullen? (or the Friendship one?). The age is close to "Atlas" james Cullen's 1828 age (would be 70). DEATH 1840 James Cullen "age 72" [NSWBDM 578/1840 V1840578 24A)
