Eliza Curtin was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Convict Notes




The convict indentures state that Eliza Curtin was 27 years old. She could read and write; religion Roman Catholic; status widowed with 1 son one daughter and a native of City Cork. She was a kitchen maid. Jane was convicted on 3 August 1838 at Cork City and sentenced for 7 years for stealing clothes. She had no prior conviction. Physical attributes: height 4 feet 9 1/4 inches; complexion ruddy and freckled; hair brown mixed with grey and eyes light blue. Transport number 147. Prisoner number 145-39. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1845 (number 45/1264).
