Convict Notes

Jeremiah was a troublesome prisoner. After only 6 weeks he got 24 lashes of the cat o' nine tails for trafficking in another prisoners shirt.2 years later, solitary confinement for neglect of duty, 2 years later 6 months hard labour for neglect of duty with insolence. He eventually married Ellen Talbot,a convict at Cascades womens prison.A double wedding on 8/9/1845, at C.of E. church,Battery Point,Hobart, with brother John and his bride Ellen Sweeney, both also freed convicts. Brother Thomas, freed convict, was present. The church is still there. Brother John and his Ellen, cleared off to the mainland on the giant paddle steamer "Kangaroo",landing off shore and disembarking near Portland at what is now Bridgewater Bay,I believe.Ellen (Talbot) was not due to get her freedom papers for another year, but family legend has it,and I believe so,that Jeremiah and his Ellen cleared off out of the place with John and his Ellen, all on the same boat, and changed their name. There is no further record known of what happened to them.
