Dorchester Lent Assizes were not terminated till late on Saturday night of the 14th instant. The following prisoners received sentences as under :— ... John Dally and Wm. Hallson, for burglary; ... received sentence of death. Salisbury Journal, 23 Mar 1818.

John Dalley, a wool comber and dyer, was convicted 12 March 1818 at Dorset Assizes for burglary. He was sentenced to death, which was reprieved to transportation for life. He arrived Sydney New South Wales, Australia on the ship 'General Stuart' on 31 December 1818. The convict indent describes him as age 19, 5 feet 8 inches, fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. Dorchester Prison, Dorchester, Dorset, England: The prison register has the following: John Dalley age 17, single, wool comber of Broadwinsor. Brought to prison 3 March 1818 "removed by Habeas Corpus from Poole". There had been a writ dated 12 February. At the Assizes convicted 20 May 1818 of burglary, sentence death reprieved to life transportation. Description: 5 feet 6 inches, brown hair, gray eyes, fair complexion. Freckled in face with a few on & under shoulder [not clear], large cut on right side of forehead under the hair, little fingers both hands rather crooked, small cut on joint forefinger left hand [the rest not clear]. Arrival 31 Dec 1818 Sydney New South Wales, Australia on 'General Stuart'. In the 1828 census he is 32, in the Bathurst area, working as a footman at the property 'Woodlands', Macquarie Plains, the property of John Street who has a wife and infant child. John Dally's future wife Catherine Dobbins is also working there as a nurse. Ticket of Leave 26 Dec 1828 Bathurst, New South Wales: John Dalley, Ship General Stuart 1818, Native Place: Broadwindsor Dorset. Trade: Dyer. Place & Date of Trial: Dorset Assizes 12 March 1818. Sentence: Life. Birth 1798. Height 5 feet 6 1/2 inches. Complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes blue. The ticket was altered for the district of Sydney in 1831. Marriage about 1829. No marriage registration has been found. In the Registers of Convicts' Applications to Marry, their application, from Bathurst, Catherine Dobbins (Mariner, bond, age 31) and John Dalley (General Stuart, Tof L, age 30), was refused 22 August 1829 because Catherine was 'already married'. However in the application for publication of banns she is a widow, TofL 27/532, recommended by Mr Street. His ticket of leave was altered for the district of Sydney in 1831. Residence in September 1831: John Dalley was carrying a business as a shopkeeper and General Dealer opposite the Commissariat Stores in George Street Sydney, according to a petition by his wife Catherine to the directors of the Parramatta orphan school, asking for the release of her daughter Catherine. 8 September 1836 He received an Absolute Pardon. Death 14 November 1871. 'DEATH. DALLEY— At his residence, Macquarie street, on the 14th instant, John Dalley, Esq., aged 70 years. Requieseate in pace.' (Freeman's Journal, 18 November 1871, p. 8) Buried in Devonshire Street Cemetery. Appoints his wife, son William and Eyre Goulburn Ellis executors and trustees. His estate includes several properties in Sydney.
