David was born in 1790 at Abergwili, Carmarthenshire, Wales and was convicted of house breaking and stealing keys, food & clothing at the age of 28. Convict indents state that he was 5' 4 1/2" tall, dark complexion, black hair & dark eyes. David was assigned as a labourer to John Single, at Single's Farm, Luskintyre. He obtained his Certificate of Freedom 1 Jun 1832. David married Catherine Wilson in 1834 at the Church of England, Hunter District, Maitland, and had 5 children. Catherine was a free settler and had arrived in the colony with her previous soldier husband, John Wells, aboard the ship Orpheus on 13 Sep 1826. Not much else is known about David’s life before transportation but it is quite possible that he could speak the Welsh language. David passed away 20 Oct 1877 at Yango creek, Wollombi, New South Wales, Australia.
