Convict Notes

Their son Richard was transported to Tasmania where he married. He and his family moved to Victoria. His brother Joseph, father Joseph and mother, Maria, also joined him in Victoria.

Joseph Davis was born 03/11/1765 Baptised 24/11/1765, St Leonard, Shoreditch Hackney, Middlesex, England; the son of Joseph Davis and Mary Marfield who married 10/04/1763, of the Land of Promise. Joseph Davis was a watchmaker not a watch chain maker but I have been unable to alter that item. This family moved to Victoria where Joseph died at Glencoe Run in 1858 and Maria Marshall died in 1850 at Yarra Survey. Both their sons are found in Victoria.

Joseph was aged 36 when indicted for stealing various items of clothing from the dwelling house of John Crabb, the goods being the property of Samuel Chivers. 1803-1805 was a convict, but was emancipated by the 1805-06 muster and shown to have had 1000 acres or more under crops with a Mr Gregory Blaxcell, including animals and had about a dozen men working for him. By 1814 Muster he was off stores and working as a watchmaker again. 1823, 1824 & 1825 Musters show Joseph in Sydney with his chilldren, Joseph, Richard, Elizabeth and Louisa in Sydney, with a convict pardon. With Maria Marshall (per Sydney Cove) in Parramatta with her daughter Maria (Matilda from her previous marriage when in England, Maria was employed by Joseph with the residence being in Pitt St, Sydney. Joseph and Maria were both widowed from their previous partners in England, and although they had 6 children from 1811-1826 they married in 1831 at St Phillips Church, Sydney. Joseph was 63 when they married. Their son Richard is listed on the 1828 census as being 15 and employed as a labourer by Charles Pinkstone and living in Cambridge St, Sydney. Their daughter Elizabeth Henrietta or Mary as aged 11 and employed as a servant by Samuel Cove and living in Clarence St, Sydney. No date of death for Joseph found.

Married Maria Marshall ( convict to Australia 1807 Sydney ) and had approx. six children. Including two sons, Joseph Jnr., and Richard.
