Robert Deakin was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 2nd Oct 1822 and arriving 4th Mar 1823 with 161 passengers.

Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Deakin, John Hoe and ? were Indicted feloniously stealing five and twenty bushels of barley and John Brewster knowing property have been stolen The barley which it said was fusty was brought in a boat by John to Simpson’s wharf the 29th of June last the boat and barley were afterwards taken to Robinson’s Wharf by Elliott who saw the sacks removed by the prisoners into Chetwynd’s cart William Chetwynd said that he had a horse and cart at Robinson’s wharf when three men asked him them. He took it to Mr Brewster’s by one of men’s orders. ... ... Brewster’s bringing him some barley which he bought of Machin of Burton The examination of Deakin and Brewster was produced Mr Sculthorpe— Guilty. Deakin, Hoe and Tufley, to be transported for seven and Brewster for fourteen years Nottingham Journal, 17 Aug 1822.

11/3/1823: On list of convicts forwarded to Evan for distribution. Listed as Thomas Deacon. 1825: On list of Government servants employed by John Lees of Evan, from March 1823. Listed as Deaken. 14/4/1825: Convict in the srvice of John Lees las two musters. Listed as Deacon. 31/8/1829: COF. Apparently Robert was then transported for life from Port Adelaide per schooner Kate in 1839. From the Southern Australia Newspaper 6/11/1839: Robert 'Deakins' was charged with stealing a more from Captain Field, he was found guilty and transported per Kate. He had used 'Robert Muirhead' as an alias in dealings selling horses which were not his to sell. From the Syd.Gaz. 5/2/1841: Deakin Robert, Kate, 43, Leicestershire, labourer, 5feet 10 1/4 inches, sallow comp., brown hair, blue eyes, scar on right side of chin, breast hairy, large raised mole centre of same, mark of a bile? near right elbow, two small moles below same, scar on thunb, another on third, and two on little fingers of right hand, scar outside left elbow, another below the same; he was transported before in the same name, per ship Surry (4) in 1823, for seven years; from Stockade, Illawarra, since September 22, 1840.
