The Convict Indentures state that Catherine Dogherty was 34 years old. She could not read or write; religion Roman Catholic; status widow with one son and 1 daughter and a native of County Kilkenny. She was a house maid. Catherine was convicted of stealing a watch on 17 July 1837 and sentenced to 7 years transportation. She had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: height 5 feet 3 inches; complexion ruddy freckled and pock pitted; hair brown and eyes bluish. Transport number 157. Prisoner number 156-38. Received Certificate of Freedom on 24 December 1844 (number 44/1874). Please note that the offence is stated as vagrancy on the Certificate of Freedom when it should be stealing a watch. The offence was incorrectly transcribed.
