Old Bailey trial no. 1962, 20 Aug 1838 age 13 stealing to pawn from his widowed Mum, Mary Gordon of Bethnal Green. In Newgate, Parkhurst Prisons, Hulk Ships moored Chatham, Gosport, transported at 18, earned Free Cert 1845. London 1850 Merchant Seaman 478072, married Hannah Elliott (from Arundel) 1851 Bethnal Green. Moved Liverpool, became Rigger and had 5 children, died Toxteth at 40, Gangrene of Lungs. Born Edinburgh to sailor, George and Mary Douglas, eldest of 4, had 2 brothers and sister. Proud of our 2x Paternal Great-Grandfather who a hard life, lost father young, was boy sailor at 12, spent 7 years imprisoned but went on to turn life round. He named 2 children after parents George and Mary, even though Mary was witness and victim son’s prosecution. (Often name misspelt Bentlum). Twin Descendants
