John Dwyer, a child of nine years old, was sentenced at Cork to transported for seven years, for stealing a watch from Michael Colbert of Fermoy. Roscommon and Leitrim Gazette, 13 Aug 1831. John Dwyer, very intelligent hoy, apparently about nine years old, was indicted for stealing watch, at Fermoy, the property of Michael Colbert, on the 9th of July last. It appeared in evidence, that the prisoner pledged the watch in pawnbroker’s office at Fermoy   and a policeman took the ticket of the watch from him on suspicion. Being asked by his Lordship, whether he would wish to ask the owner of the any question, he said with a most curious and comical expression of countenance. My laird, I have been in the habit of taking articles to that woman, and how would I know the pawn-office  if I had not gone there before. T. Wiseman, to whom the pawn-office belonged, said she had never seen him before. The Jury immediately found the prisoner Guilty. His Lordship ordered him to transported for seven years’  and said he hoped he would be a better boy in Botany Bay than had been at home. The prisoner with the greatest sangfroid—said, Thank you my Lord.” His Lordship said, “His Lordship said, “they will take good care of you there, you may be sure.” Prisoner—“l will my Lord.—(great laughter).    Cork Constitution, 9 Aug 1831.
