Old Bailey: RICHARD EMPTY, Theft > grand larceny, 6th May 1818. Offence: Theft > grand larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation RICHARD EMPTY was indicted for stealing, on the 29th of March, one saddle, value 10s.; one bridle, value 5s.; and one cart wanty, value 10s., the goods of William Cotton. THOMAS BAKER . I am servant to Mr. William Cotton , who lives at Laytonstone. On the 28th of March, at night, I left the things safe in the stable, and missed them next morning. HENRY HORNSBY. I am a patrol of Hackney. On the 29th of March, about four o'clock in the morning, I saw the prisoner by Lea-bridge turnpike with a sack - I asked him what was in it? he said a saddle, which he had brought from Mr. Dobree's, at Walthamstow, and was taking it to town. Cross-examined by MR. MARSHAM. He said it was a saddle only. It contained the articles stated in the indictment. EDWARD HATFIELD . I was with Hornsby. He has spoken correctly (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. I saw a man drop them, and I picked them up. GUILTY. Aged 38. Transported for Seven Years. On the Voyage: Folio 21: 21 September 1818; at 9am put handcuffs on Richard Empty (convict) and kept him on deck in a sentry's charge until sunset for disrespect to the first mate. Per "Hadlow", 1818 1823 Jan 29; On list of persons who obtained tickets of leave during the last week (Reel 6039; 4/424 p.132) 16/6/1825: COF 7/12/1844 Parramatta Chronicle and Cumb erland General Advertiser, NSW A Madman. — On Saturday last, the neighbourhood of Marsden-street, was thrown into a state of great alarm, from the violent behavour of an old man, named Richard Empty, who had been employed minding sheep about the town., He was in a most violent fit of madness, stripping the clothes from off his person, and when naked tearing his flesh and using most horrid imprecations. It was wilh some difficulty, that through the means of Mr. Blake, the publican, he was secured, and the Police having been sent for, he was tied hand and foot, and taken to the station house. He remained there till Sunday, when he was visited by some medical gentlemen, and the fit having gone off him, he was pronounced well. He was brought before the Bench on Monday, and ordered to be discharged, although the Chief Constable gave it as his opinion that the man was not even then in his proper senses. 1847: NSW BDM - Richard Empty died, aged 60 ?? (According to his trial he was born C1780 but this puts his birth date as 1787).
