Thomas Finnerty was transported on the Ocean, departing 22nd Apr 1823 and arriving 27th Aug 1823 with 175 passengers.
The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Convict Notes

I'm pretty sure that Thomas Finarty married Maria Carey in Dublin in 1842. Their first child, Margaret, was born in Dublin in 1844. Maria and Margaret then sailed to Hobart on board the convict ship John Calvin as free passengers, but there's no sign of Thomas! It was common in those days to re-unite families of convicts by giving their wife free passage to Australia. So, it seems that Thomas did his time in Hobart, went back to Dublin, married Maria, had a child Margaret, and then was AGAIN transported to Hobart. But I can't find any record of how Thomas made his way back to Hobart, other than as a recidivist.

On the Prison Hulk Register, Leviathan, No. 6168, his crime is written as P.L. (or D.L.).
