Medical journal of the Eliza, convict ship, from 19 March to 18 September 1832 by Thomas Bell, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in a passage from Cork to Sydney, New South Wales. Folios 78-79: case no 31, Patrick Fox, prisoner; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, complained of frequent purging with inclination to vomit, think’s his pork and pea soup do not agree with him never ate so much meat in all his life as on board this ship; put on sick list 17 August 1832, left the hospital 20 August 1832, the [next] morning this man came into hospital, he complained more of his dangerous state than any patient I ever had. The lower class of Irish generally aggravate their complaints by despondency.




Ennis Assizes – Friday Feb 24. Patrick Fox alias Sheennel, on Saturday pleaded guilty to indictment charging him with the robbery of John M'Mahon, of Wine-field. Fox had been previously transported for the …. upon the dwelling-house of Michael O’Keeffe, and the robbery of Patrick O’Keeffe, the first Commission, but was, upon the representation of his friends his Excellency the Ford Lieutenant. that he was “a young man of unblemished character,” sent back from the hulk at Cove. Immediately upon Fox’s return to Ennis, the Magistrates put committals upon him for sundry other offences, in which this “young man of unblemished character” had been concerned as principal accessary. The trial look place on Saturday for one of those offences, and he pleaded guilty, he was sentenced to be Transported for Life. Cork Constitution,1 Mar 1832.
