William Gaff was transported on the Marion, departing 22nd Nov 1843 and arriving 3rd Apr 1844 with 302 passengers.
Built 1834 at Calcutta. Wood ship of 684 Tons. The 1847/48 voyage sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) BUT also went on to Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where 300 exiles disembarked. (The newspaper source says they were from Millbank, Pentonville & Parkhurst prisons.)

William Gaff was 22 years old on arrival in VDL. He was transported for burglary and stealin farthings. He was sent to Maria Island, VDL. William was 5'3" tall, had an uncle, Benjamin Dunn at his ntive place of Norfolk, could read, single, protestant, sullen complexion dark brown hair and eyes. Period of Probation: 24 months. Station of Gang: Maria Island. Conduct: disrespectful, insolence, misconduct in concealing tobacco under the most indecent circumstances-6 days solitary, ect. 30/3/1847: Still at Maria Island. 12/8/1851: TOL 1/8/1854: CP 22/6/1855: Courier, Hobart: Donated to the Patriotic War Fund.
