17/7/1839 Dover Telegraph and Cinque Ports General Advertiser Kent, England:
John Gage, 26, soldier, was charged with having violently assaulted an carnally known Rebecca Sharpe against her will, at Gillingham.  Also with robbing the said Rebecca Elizabeth Sharpe of two sixpences, four halfpence, one book, and one ribbon, the property of William Sharpe ; and at the time of such robbery, using personal violence.  He was only tried upon the latter charge, but the details are unfit for publication.
He was found Guilty, and sentenced to be transported for life.

He was private John Gage of the 15th Hussars.

John Gage was 28 years old on arrival : Native Place: Queen’s County.

John was literate, protestant, single, 5’9½” tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, lost two front teeth on right side of upper jaw, scar on throat, mark of a boil inside upper right arm, scar back of forefinger of each hand, scar on knuckle of middle finger of left hand.
