John Gamble died by his own hand at the Benevolent Asylum in Camperdown on 27 February 1851, Coroner inquired into his death on 6 March 1851 and the verdict was “Cut his throat – intent”.

DEATH OF WIFE ANN Ann was buried at Parramatta on 5 October 1828. St John’s death register records “Ann Gamble, buried Parramatta, aged 39 years, Free, wife of Mill-wright.” Rev Samuel Marsden performed the ceremony. The John Smith who the Gamble family is boarding with in the Nov 1828 Census is probably his son-in-law. John Smith married John’s daughter, Martha Gamble aged 16 or 17, in 1825 (NSWBDM 3623/1825 V18253623 3B) at St Luke’s Anglican Church, Liverpool. His son John Gamble jun, aged 13 in 1828, is not recorded living with the family in 1828. His other daughter, Ann, would marry the following year in 1829: Ann Gamble Mrrd 17 May 1829 to James Alderson, at Scots Presbyterian Church in Sydney. Ann was aged 18 and Alderton was 23 (Free per ‘Harvery’, 27 August 1827. Ann’s first child, (another Ann) was born 4 months later. Daughter Martha would marry, aged 22 or 23, in 1831 to Henry F Drinkwater at Scots Presbyterian Church, Sydney. ***********************************

John Gamble was convicted at the March Assizes in Durham of the crime of “having various forged bank notes” in his possession”. [Criminal Register for County of Durham, 1819 (p 269). Although his family is recorded always as being in York, he may have gone north to Durham to pass the notes so he would not be recognised. ARRIVAL of HIS FAMILY As detailed in posts above, his wife Ann Gamble and five of their children arrived in NSW, free, in November 1823 on the ship Jupiter. Stated in the 1825 Muster, the children were Ann jun, Isabella, Martha, John, and George. Robert is not listed – he may have died, or stayed given age 15. Ann as a free woman applied to have her husband assigned to her. They lived at Parramatta, as a family. A daughter Charlotte was born in NSW. In the 1828 Census Charlotte was recorded living with her father John and two other siblings. Stated to be aged 4 (so born in 1824). However, she’d been baptised later, on 7 October 1826, at St James’s Church, Sydney. [Note that a witness to John & Ann Gillespie’s marriage in 1806 was a Charlotte Gillespie, probably sister, or mother, of Ann) WORK AS MILLWRIGHT John Gamble probably worked at the Darling Mills, which were on the Darling Mills Creek (names after the mill). The Darling Mills had been built in 1825 by John Raines and were near the Brokenback Bridge on the Parramatta-Windsor Road. John is recorded as a millwright upon Ann’s death in October 1828. John’s occupations in NSW: 1822 – Assigned government servant, stage coach driver 1823 - 1825 – assigned to his wife. But his occupation is what? 1828, October, wife’s death, a mill-wright. 1828 additional November 1828 Census entry for him: millwright, living with householder Mr Charles Fairs, Parramatta. In the 1828 Census, Charles Fairs was the Superintendant of the Darling Mills . 1828, November Census - coach-maker living in George Street as a boarder with John Smith, and with three of his children, Isabella who would be 15, George who would be ten, and Charlotte, said to be aged 4. ***********************************************

NOV 1806: Marriage of John Gamble and Ann GILLESPIE 1806 1807 ROBERT GAMBLE, baptised 1 February 1807, at Sowerby, [North Yorkshire]. (From Sowerby Baptism Register, online on Ancestry.com) Robert Gamble is not recorded as arriving with his mother and other siblings in 1823. He may have died, or he may have stayed in Yorkshire, being then about 16 years old. 1808 MARTHA GAMBLE, baptised 24 Oct 1808 at Sower-by-Thirsk, Yorkshire. 1811 ANN GAMBLE, “3rd child” is recorded in the baptism registry book. Born 9 January 1811, Baptised 11 January 1811, In the Parish of St Sampson’s, Yorkshire. [This parish church is in the heart of York city centre] The Register records the following for “father’s name, Profession, Descent and Abode: “Daughter of John Gamble of Thursday Markett [sic[, Guard to a Mail Coach. Son of John Gamble, the same Parish, Labourer.” [The name, “Thursday Market” was historically the name of the market square area now called St Sampson’s Square, after St Sampson’s Church, right in the middle of York City.] 1813 ISABELLA GAMBLE, baptised 12 September 1813 at St Olave’s, York, County Yorkshire, parents John & Ann. Father’s occupation “Guard to the Mail”. Abode: “Marygate”. (Minister: Thomas Jessop) Note Marygate Street is in York City, running just north of the city center, From St Mary’s Tower at its north end and down to the River Ouse, at its south end. 1815 JOHN GAMBLE, baptised 5 October 1815 at St Olave’s, York, County Yorkshire, parents John & Ann. Father’s occupation “Coach Guard”. ( Minister: Thomas Jessop) 1818 GEORGE GAMBLE, born 3 January 1818, baptised 6(?) January. (John Chester or Acaster, Vicar). Abode: Parish St Helen’s, Stonegate, York. [Stonegate is an historic street in the centre of York, with many buildings dating from the C12 – C17.]. Father’s occupation was joiner. His occupation as ‘joiner’ is a change for John who was always a coachman or coach driver until this point. It may have been a negative change in his fortunes, or perhaps he had too many mouths to feed, leading him to forge bank notes. He was also found in Durham 66 miles north of York – he may have gone here dealing in forged notes so that he would not be recognised in York. ******************************

A John Gamble MARRIED Ann Gillespie at St Wilfred’s Anglican Church, at Kirby Knowles, Yorkshire on 15 May 1806. The village of Kirby Knowles is five & a half miles north of the village of Sowerby where the first children of John & Ann were born. This is likely to be the same John Gamble as was transported on ‘Atlas’ in 1819 “John Gamble of Sowerby, bachelor, and Ann Gillespie of this parish, spinster, were married in this church by banns by me, [the Rector] In the presence of Margaret Irving and Charlotte Gillespie” Both John and Ann could sign their own names. John Gamble was born in Sowerby, near Thursk, in North Yorkshire. His father was also John Gamble, (stated on 1811 baptism registration of his daughter Ann Gamble jnr] and his mother was another Ann. The following two children are likely to be younger brothers of John the convict, they are not his children: 1799 – GEORGE GAMBLE, “the son of John and Ann Gamble” baptised 29 Sept 1799, at Sowerby, [North Yorkshire]. (From Sowerby Baptism Register, online on Ancestry.com) 1802 – JOHN GAMBLE, “the son of John and Ann Gamble” baptised 24 January 1802, at Sowerby, [North Yorkshire]. (From Sowerby Baptism Register, online on Ancestry.com)

Regarding the iain Frazier statement above. ESTHER GAMBLE is NOT the CHILD OF THIS JOHN & ANN Esther Gamble who arrived on “Friends” in 1811 aged 14 or 15 or so, after an Old Bailey trial in 1810 where she was said to be aged 13, was not the child of John Gamble per ‘Atlas’ and his wife Ann, free on ‘Jupiter’. She may have been the child baptised 21 June 1795 as Esther Mary Gamble, daughter of John and Ann, at St James’s Paddington, Westminster, as the post states. However it is not possible that these parents are the John and Ann who come to NSW. There is no evidence that they are. All the evidence is contrary to it. • Mrs Ann Gamble at her burial at Parramatta in October 1828 is recorded by Rev Marsden as aged 39 years. So she was born in 1788 or ‘89. It is NOT possible that Ann gave birth to Esther in 1795-1798 when Ann was aged ten or less. Although the age point proves it, some common sense can be applied as well: • If they are Esther’s parents, why did Ann have Esther in Middlesex, when she and John were both born in the north of England and all the following births, and their marriage, all occurred in the north of England? • The Old Bailey record refers to a sister of the accused Esther. Why were two young girls left in London on their own while their supposed parents raised more children in North Yorkshire. *********************
