"My 3 x great grandfather. He married Mary Bailey in 1831. Mary was daughter of Kent convict John Bailey. The Gard family moved to South Australia in the late 1840's and the death of Thomas is not known. Mary died in 1894."

National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/92/18 Prisoner name(s): Thomas Bennet Gard (or Thomas Bennettgard). Court and date of trial: Wiltshire Lent Assizes 1822. Crime: House-breaking. Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life. Annotated (Outcome): 9 May 1822 Refused. Petitioner(s): William Howard, in whose house the prisoner had lived for five years and four others, all inhabitants of Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Innocence of prisoner - he had merely been found speaking to the culprits when officers came to arrest them; good character of the prisoner throughout life. Date, 1822 Apr 25.

Father Robert Gard was transported in 1819 (aged 59) Married Mary Bailey in 1831 and moved to South Australia 1850's. Date of death unknown
