Charles was born in Ottery St Mary Devon in England ion 18 August 1802 and married Frances Elizabeth Dufour on 14 April 1823 in Gloucester. He sentenced to death for forgery in Cardiff, Wales at Lent Assizes on 9 April 1825. His conviction was commuted to transportation to NSW for life and he was sent to the prison hulk Justitia at Woolwich on 17 June 1825.

Charles Gayler/Gaylor was 25 years old on arrival in VDL. He was married, and he applied for his family to be brought out to Tasmania. 1830-1833: at the Public Works. 1835: TOL 24/5/1835: CP Hobart 8/9/1842: Free pardon. 1/4/1833: Married Phillis Blyth, she was a widow. They had 12 children. Phillis died in 1869 aged 65. Charles was 56 years old when he died in 1855.
